With a special off-road handcycle you can really take a ‘wheelchair’ places where you couldn't before. An awesome way to easily get into the mountains all year-round.

The old misconception that people in wheelchairs are limited in options for having fun, or participating in sports is dead. Long dead. It was beaten to death by those pioneering people who refused to sit quietly in wheelchairs when they were expected too. Wheelchair basketball, rugby, athletics and dozens of other sports are highly professional and competitive, allowing those who were active before they met a wheelchair to carry on doing what they want to do. And have fun at the same time.

For me it was all about the hills, I just wanted to get back out amongst the hills again. I wanted to compete against myself, and the wheelchair itself. I wanted to go places that the wheelchair tried telling me I couldn't go anymore, Im not stubborn for the sake of being stubborn though, if the wheelchair thinks it cant go somewhere then fine. I just invented ways of going there in a different way.

You cant walk over the hills anymore, all but the most pavement like of pathways, up the gentlest of slopes becomes a lung and arm shattering ordeal in a normal wheelchair meant for roads and pavements. It brings frustration at not being able to just relax and enjoy being in awe of the natural surroundings.

Not being able to use you legs doesn't make things impossible, it just means that some ingenuity is needed which in turn makes the challenge and rewards much more worthwhile. Getting to the top of a mountain is definitely harder now-a-days, but the sense of achievement is multiplied too.

For those who seek adventure, there are so many ways to fulfill the need for exploration and challenge of the outdoors, being paralysed is not something that can hold them back. The biggest hurdle for most people is the lack of, or expense of the specialised equipment needed to take part in many activities that without a disability wouldn't need any. For many people the freedom of the hills and valleys is simply unattainable purely because they lack the equipment needed to replace the use of their legs. I am passionate about helping other people with disabilities to experience the adventure and exhilaration so easily accessible to able bodied people. My ultimate goal is to gain enough knowledge and experience, adding it to my military training to lead activity holidays and expeditions for other disabled people.

Interested in getting involved with some disabled adventures and expeditions? I’m hoping to get the first adventure going through the Canadian Rockies, with mountain biking and kayaking.
